Op jonge leeftijd kwam Maria Verstappen (1960) in aanraking met verf en kleur in het schildersbedrijf van haar ouders. Daar hielp zij mee met het mengen en adviseren van verf en kleur. Vooral kleur bleek haar te intrigeren en inspireren.  

De kunst van Maria zit vol beweging en intensiteit. Haar schilderijen geven haarzelf als ook de kijker een gevoel van vrijheid. Het is een ontzagwekkende kracht, zoekend naar een materiële vorm. Haar schilderijen zijn als een woeste zee en een stille lucht of een mysterieuze transformatie. 

Haar kleurcomposities domineren haar werk, de keuze van de materialen worden daarop afgestemd. Intuïtief bepaalt zij de abstracte vormentaal die een universele uitstraling heeft. Van natuurverschijnselen tot het heelal. De verbinding in haar werk is de zoektocht naar harmonie, eerst de kleur en dan weer de vorm. Deze relatie in haar werk tussen het moment van ontstaan, het wikken en wegen totdat er een balans ontstaat, omschrijft zij als in "dialoog blijven met het schilderij".
Het werk is zo geabstraheerd dat je ze in alle posities kunt ophangen, daarom signeert ze haar schilderijen aan de achterzijde.
Maria is internationaal gericht en exposeert o.a. in Zwitserland, Oostenrijk, Duitsland, België en Spanje.

At a young age, Maria Verstappen (1960) came into contact with paint and color in her parents’ painting business.
She helped with mixing and advising paint and color. Color in particular appeared to intrigue and inspire her. The art of Maria, (self-taught) is full of movement and intensity. Her paintings give herself and the viewer a feeling of freedom. It is an awesome force, seeking a material form. Her paintings are like a raging sea and a still sky or a mysterious transformation.

Her color compositions dominate her work, the choice of materials is adjusted accordingly. She intuitively determines the abstract design language that has a universal appearance. From natural phenomena to the universe. The connection in her work is the search for harmony, first the color and then the form. She describes this relationship in her work between the moment of creation, the deliberation until a balance is created as “staying in dialogue with the painting”.
The work is so abstract that you can hang it in all positions, which is why she signs her paintings on the back.
Maria is internationally oriented and exhibits in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Belgium and Spain.
